It’s not often that the opportunity to attend a music festival on a tropical island with five-star cuisine and luxury lodging presents itself. Fyre Festival, created by Fyre Media, Inc., a talent agency created by singer Ja Rule and Billy McFadden, promised all of these things and more. The festival was supposed to take place over the course of two weekends, the first being April 28-30 and the second being May 5-7. Tickets are reported to have cost between $1,500 and $12,000. However, according to testimony of many festival-goers, nothing panned out and the entire thing was a train wreck of epic proportions.

More and more news about Fyre Festival has continued to pour in since ticket-holders’ arrival on Hamilton, an island in the Bahamas where the event was supposed to transpire. Some attendees chronicled their experiences and disappointments with the festival live on Twitter for the world to see. Issues with elements such as security, artists and food dragged the event down and eventually brought it to its quick and disastrous end. Headliners blink-182 pulled out of the shows before the event even began, citing a lack of confidence that they “would have what [they] need to give [fans] the quality of performances [they]  always give [their] fans” on the band’s Twitter account. Other artist such as G.O.O.D Music and Major Lazer also bailed from the event.

From there, the event headed downhill fast. As people arrived, they reported a lack of safe and reliable transportation, first and foremost. Many said that they were dropped at a beach and left there without anywhere to go or any direction on what would be happening next. When they were finally brought to where they were staying, the luxurious villas that were promised were nowhere in sight. The only housing being offered appeared to be canvas disaster tents leftover from Hurricane Matthew with no security and no electricity.

The food was also a very large letdown. Instead of the eloquent cuisine that was promised, cheese sandwiches were doled out to those who were there. It appears that the organizers of Fyre Festival were just overwhelmed and were completely unable to deliver on the high promises that they had made.

Since then, all attendees have left the island, though that was an ordeal in itself. A large chunk of people were locked in the airport while attempting to leave the fraud of a festival, with no food or water and surrounded by guards that reportedly “got into it” with some of the festival-goers. Flights were long and delayed, causing more frustration in an already unfavorable situation.

On April 28, the day after everyone arrived on the island to discover the sorry excuse for a festival, Ja Rule released a statement on his Twitter apologizing to those in attendance and asserting that it “is NOT [his] FAULT…” You can read his full statement to the right.

The official website for Fyre Festival also released their own statement on the events the day after Ja Rule’s, in which they explain that their “team was overwhelmed” and “all festival goers this year will be refunded in full.” They also mention that there will be another attempt at the extravagant festival next year in a “United States beach venue.”

However, Ja Rule and other organizers aren’t out of the flames yet. Announcements are still steadily being released about numerous lawsuits being filed against Fyre Festival. Rolling Stone reports the number to be at six lawsuits as of today (May 8), some being upwards of $5 million.

Celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid who had previous promoted the festival on their social media platforms, have also cut ties with it, having deleted all of the promotional posts.
